Drawing from the same design language and acoustic innovation that made Mordaunt-Short a favorite among British hi-fi enthusiasts, the Edge S stands as a refined evolution of that legacy.

 

As the only Hi-Fi audio shop in the U.S. to carry the Edge S, we’re honored to share it with our community. But for Fred Parvey—our family’s original audiophile—this speaker isn’t just a new arrival. It’s the fulfillment of a long-standing fascination. Below, Fred shares his personal journey with Mordaunt-Short, his love for British engineering, and his first impressions of a speaker that brings the past and present together in one stunning system.

Mordaunt-Short Speakers: A Long-Awaited Encounter

I’ve always had a soft spot for British engineering—whether it’s in audio, autos, or anything with character and soul. When Lotus first announced pre-orders for the Elise, I didn’t hesitate. I ordered mine in British Racing Green. That same enthusiasm, that same respect for craftsmanship, is what’s fueled my decades-long fascination with British hi-fi—and especially Mordaunt-Short speakers.

 

I remember reading about them years ago—how their Performance 6 speakers pushed the boundaries of acoustic design with composite cabinets, aspirated tweeters, and clean, piston-like driver movement. But despite all the glowing reviews, I never got the chance to hear a pair in person. They remained the ones that got away—always admired, never encountered.

 

So when Joe told me we’d be bringing in the Cambridge Audio Edge S speakers—and that they were inspired by the Mordaunt-Short Performance 6—I felt like I was finally getting that long-awaited introduction.

Cambridge Audio and Mordaunt-Short have always represented two sides of the same coin. Both founded in the late ’60s, both rooted in British audio innovation. When they came under shared ownership in the ’90s, they started exchanging ideas and design DNA. Mordaunt-Short focused on loudspeakers with radical materials and structural acoustics, while Cambridge honed its electronics—amplifiers, DACs, CD players. The Edge S is the beautiful intersection of those two legacies.

You see it in the Edge S’s aspirated tweeter enclosure—directly descended from Mordaunt-Short’s Performance series. You hear it in the continuous profile cones, the minimal crossover network, and the striking sculptural cabinet that rejects MDF for inert polyurethane resin. It’s bold, elegant, and acoustically pure.

 

For me, seeing the Cambridge Edge S in person feels like witnessing Mordaunt-Short’s legacy reborn under a different name. The Edge S is a true flagship, a limited-edition speaker handcrafted with no compromise on engineering (Cambridge is only making 68 pairs worldwide to honor their 1968 founding). I just love the carryover of Mordaunt-Short’s signature Aspirated Tweeter Technology: the tweeter sits in its own floating, well-ventilated enclosure, so the high frequencies literally get to “breathe” free of the colorations that plague sealed designs. Twin midrange/bass drivers employ Continuous Profile Cone geometry for smooth, piston-like motion with minimal breakup – another hallmark trickled down from Mordaunt-Short. Inside, Cambridge’s engineers have pared the crossover down to just 16 components to keep the signal path ultra-pure, ensuring nothing muddies the Edge S’s fidelity. And physically, the whole speaker is anchored by a hefty CNC-milled aluminum plinth with spiked feet, giving it rock-solid stability and echoing that no-nonsense, performance-first ethos.

Sitting in our showroom, listening to the Edge S, I finally feel like I’ve met the speaker I’ve chased for decades. It may wear the Cambridge name, but its soul? That’s pure Mordaunt-Short—and pure British brilliance.

When we designed a pair of speakers for Edge, we took inspiration from our sister British brand Mordaunt Short. Their Performance 6 speakers set a high standard to beat, but to carry the Edge name our new speakers had to be even more special. Edge is for people who don’t accept compromise, and our engineers in London took their responsibilities very seriously when developing Edge S.

True Limited Edition

Edge S speakers are handmade to exacting standards. They’re so special that we’ll only ever make 68 pairs – to celebrate our foundation year of 1968. Edge was introduced to commemorate Cambridge Audio’s 50 years in business, Edge S continues in that tradition. Over half a century in the pursuit of audio perfection is something special. 

Inner Beauty

An acoustically inert polyurethane resin chassis made internal radical sculpting possible. Modern engineering principles and components helped us push Edge S to the limit of technology and acoustics. Internal wiring, external drive units, driver planar alignment and crossover redesign were all refined. Resulting in the design efficiency and enhanced audio performance demanded by Edge. 

New British Icon

The ported cabinet eschews the parallel surfaces of conventional speakers, delivering a beautifully sculpted form. The breathtaking shape eliminates colouration and has unsurpassed inherent mechanical strength, dramatically improving sound quality. This is enhanced by CNC milled aluminium driver rings and a heavy die-cast base with spiked feet. 

Aluminium Plinth

With Edge, form and function go hand-in-hand. Edge S sits on a solid aluminium base, that visually anchors its place in the Edge family. It also adds all-important structural stability, so that no energy is wasted through vibration and high performance sound output is assured. 

Aspirated Tweeter

Edge S uses Aspirated Tweeter Technology (ATT). This elongated metal diffuser (with form defined by complex acoustic principles) floats freely in a discrete enclosure. Strategically positioned vents eliminate the colouration which can affect traditional closed-back designs. This unique system means that the high frequency drivers of Edge S literally ‘breathe’, resulting in an open yet detailed sound. 

New Crossover

In a radical move, true to the Edge philosophy of ‘less is more’ and thanks to modern engineering techniques, we reduced the component count inside the crossovers to just 16. This keeps the signal path as short and clean as possible. We paid close attention to the internal cabling to ensure maximum efficiency and minimal interference with the audio reproduction. 

Driver Arrangement

New Continuous Profile Cone (CPC) mid-range drivers are surrounded by CNC machined aluminium rings. This aids efficient dispersion of audio waves, unhindered by the cabinet. It gives engaging mid-range and layers of bass detail previously unheard. As well as the drivers being better supported from the front, internal bracing hold them perfectly in place. 

5 Year Warranty

Each pair of Edge S loudspeakers comes with a limited edition certificate. That’s in addition to a 5 year parts & labour warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. We made Edge S to be special, and we know that you’ll want to keep them that way.
