It also plays compatible music files from USB storage and recordable discs. That gives it a useful second job for downloaded music without turning it into a network streamer. Connect its RCA outputs to a line-level input, or use optical or coaxial digital into a DAC you already enjoy.

The CD5 plays conventional audio CDs as well as compatible files on CD-R, CD-RW and USB storage. ARCAM lists WAV, FLAC, MP3, AAC and WMA support; the higher 88.2kHz and 96kHz rates apply to WAV and FLAC. The manufacturer’s published limit is 24-bit/96kHz for compatible files. A DAC chip’s theoretical capability should not be mistaken for the player’s supported input formats.
Use its RCA outputs to hear the player’s internal conversion, or optical/coaxial outputs to feed a separate DAC. Maximum analogue output is 2.1V RMS. This is a CD player, not an SACD player, network streamer or USB DAC for a computer. The USB-A connection is for supported storage media.
