By developing and manufacturing its cones, Focal pushes the boundaries of acoustic innovation. The "W" cone, known as the "sandwich" cone of the speakers, plays a key role in sound reproduction. It consists of two sheets of glass placed on either side of a central foam body; a sandwich construction that allows for great control of the three key parameters for a good speaker: lightness, rigidity and damping. This cone, the flagship of Focal's expertise, perfectly optimizes the frequency response curve, provides low distortion and total listening transparency. The sound is of ultimate precision.
While the material of a cone is essential, its shape is just as important. Focal engineers developed an "M" profile for the "W" fiberglass cone. This "M" profile is the result of many years of research and our expertise in cone geometries. Made from a single piece (without a core cover), it allows for, among other things, a significant reduction in harmonic distortion, better sound dispersion, and optimal power handling. A major Focal innovation that can be found on many products.
Sensational listening requires perfectly spatialized and listener-oriented sound. When developing the 1000 IWLCR Utopia speaker, our engineers designed a turntable with a d'Appolito mount that can be oriented (+/-15°). This vertical mounting, with midrange drivers positioned around the tweeter, allows for perfect adjustment to the listening position and optimal performance when used as a left, right, or center channel speaker.
The shape and materials of the cones are essential for high-fidelity reproduction. For exceptional highs, our engineers developed the inverted dome tweeter in pure Beryllium. Thanks to its unparalleled rigidity, Beryllium is a material of choice for a high-frequency speaker. Developed and patented by Focal, the inverted dome in pure Beryllium is capable of covering more than five octaves (1,000 - 40,000 Hz) for perfect perception of sound micro-details.
