The future of treble

PRISM technology is a major innovation in the mastery of high frequencies. By combining a multi-material substrate with an advanced micro-structuring process, it makes it possible to harness the full potential of each material and achieve stiffness superior to that of beryllium, while preserving a perfect balance between lightness, damping, and rigidity. The result of several years of research, patented and manufactured in France, PRISM sculpts membranes with unprecedented precision.

Perfectly defined mids and bass

By developing and manufacturing its cones, Focal pushes the boundaries of acoustic innovation. The "W" cone, known as the "sandwich" cone of the speakers, plays a key role in sound reproduction. It consists of two sheets of glass placed on either side of a central foam body; a sandwich construction that allows for great control of the three key parameters for a good speaker: lightness, rigidity and damping. This cone, the flagship of Focal's expertise, perfectly optimizes the frequency response curve, provides low distortion and total listening transparency. The sound is of ultimate precision.

M profile

For ever more impact

While the material of a cone is essential, its shape is just as important. Focal engineers developed an "M" profile for the "W" fiberglass cone. This "M" profile is the result of many years of research and our expertise in cone geometries. Made from a single piece (without a core cover), it allows for, among other things, a significant reduction in harmonic distortion, better sound dispersion, and optimal power handling. A major Focal innovation that can be found on many products.

TMD suspension

Stabilized suspension, eliminated vibrations

While our engineers are experts in developing exclusive cones, they also innovate for all the elements that make up the speakers, such as the suspension that connects the cone to the chassis and whose performance is essential to control. Created in 2015, TMD (Tuned Mass Damper) technology with harmonic damping consists of the addition of finely positioned toroidal weights, allowing the suspension to be stabilized for ever greater sound neutrality. This technology enhances the midrange and the erratic behavior of the suspension between 1kHz and 2KHz.

Anti-vibration enclosure

Since the surface area of ​​a speaker cabinet is larger than that of the driver membranes, it can radiate sounds, distorted by the resonances of the cabinet structure. This alters reproduction and blurs the sound image. To prevent such "interference", it is essential that the cabinet be as inert as possible, that it is not emissive. At Focal, we use MDF (Medium Density Fiber) to achieve this inertia. This stable, heavy structure is anti-vibration. It has been optimized by vibration mapping of the speaker walls to reinforce or modify the structure wherever a weak point appears.

Customize the exceptional

The concept of finely customizing sound, without altering signal integrity, was integrated from the very beginning of the development of the Utopia EM range. Grande Utopia offers a very wide variety of settings, in the sub-bass, bass, mid-range and treble registers, for a total of 1458 possible combinations. The OPC+ is part of this approach. It offers the ability to adapt the response curve of the speaker to the acoustics of the room, to customize the tonal balance according to the reverberation time linked to the size of the room, the nature of light or matte surfaces, the furnishings, or simply the sound preferences of each individual. Extremely sophisticated (4-way configuration, doubled by multiple settings) and distributed over 3 levels in the speaker, this filter requires 16 hours of assembly, uses only quality components determined during comparative listening.
