POWER RE-GENERATION

Unlike existing mains regenerators, IsoTek’s sine wave generation technology builds a completely new sine wave with extremely low distortion. A synchronous sine wave generator creates a fully optimized signal which is amplified by a generation engine running in either Class A/B or D (Genesis One), which is then fed to a high-quality output transformer with copper foil between the primary and secondary outputs, thus preventing distortion and noise passing through the unit. The result is up to 600W of continuous, newly generated power.

A critical part of the process is IsoTek’s unique synchronous sine wave system which replicates the frequency with zero variation so as not to create destructive harmonic distortions (beat frequencies) between the incoming mains supply and the generated electricity. In addition to eliminating distortion and producing an ultra-stable sine wave, the Genesis also controls mains voltage, ensuring the output voltage is maintained at 230V +/- 1%. By way of comparison, the European standard is 230V +/- 10%.

The end result is an extremely precise and consistent 230V/50Hz mains sine wave with vanishingly low levels of distortion, independent of the input quality of the power line. Whatever the level of distortion of the incoming mains supply, Genesis delivers exceptionally low THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) of between 0.05% and 0.17% with typical loads, remaining well below 0.3% with even the most complex loads.

INDEPENDENT SOCKETS

IsoTek products feature outlet sockets that are totally independent from each other; no two outlet sockets being directly connected. This is a critical point for limiting or eliminating the cross contamination of Differential Mode mains noise.

Each socket connects directly back to the PCB and is serviced by IsoTek’s unique power cleaning technologies.

HIGH GRADE COMPONENTS

Every IsoTek product uses the finest grade electrical components, many custom made, using the highest quality metals and materials which are specifically designed for purpose. Quality doesn’t stop at parts but also extends into the PCB designs, which maintain high levels of amperage and extraordinarily low levels of resistance, using up to eight times the general standard of copper prior to pure silver plating.

Internal wiring also uses high purity coppers combined with silver plating, with either Fluorinated Ethylene Propylene (FEP) dielectric or IsoTek’s Virtual Dielectric of Air (VDA), where a FEP tube is wound around the conductor before an extruded FEP dielectric protects this construction giving unrivalled performance and the ultimate low resistance, high performance internal power delivery system.

SURGE PROTECTION

Power surges or spikes on the mains supply are generally very bad for any electrical device especially a high quality audio replay system. Power surges occur when there is a boost to the electrical charge at some point in the power lines. This causes an increase in the electrical potential energy, which can increase the current flowing to your wall outlet. This in turn can damage your sensitive audio system.

The IsoTek protection system uses an array of VDRs which offer a cascading level of protection, in some cases over 100’000A. These step in fast and sequentially dependent upon the severity of the encountered power surge or spike. The architecture of the protection circuit extends dramatically and almost instantly when required.

The protection circuit has two primary functions, one to preserve itself and the second to step in gradually as any problem increases, with the ability to act very fast should an extreme condition occur. The protection circuits also protect the filters and the filters assist the protection in the initial stage. Unlike many protection devices these assist sound quality as well as providing protection.  Studies suggest this problem is not subtle and is frequent. The disturbing challenge is the 1’000 to 6’000V range. It is likely most protection systems do very little good and probably cause sound degradation.

SOLID OCC COPPER AG

As one would expect the internal wiring of any IsoTek product is of the highest standard, ultra pure Ohno Continuous Cast copper solid core conductor strands with silver-plating offers low resistance and high amperage. A Fluorinated Ethylene Propylene (FEP) helix is wound around the conductor before an extruded FEP dielectric protects the conductor and creates a Virtual Dielectric of Air (VDA). This construction gives unrivalled performance and gives the ultimate low resistance, high performance internal power delivery system.

IsoTek’s internal wiring synergizes with the range of IsoTek power cables. One critical but overlooked area is maintaining commonality of design and material properties though an audio wiring loom, be it signal carrying cables or your power cable network.

CONTINUOUS ABSOLUTE POWER

IsoTek delivers absolute power, unrestricted current delivery within what the power company can supply, and regulations allow. Generally, for power amplifiers or high wattage electronics IsoTek provides output which offers extremely low impedance and low DCR, this completely eliminates (within the concepts of power filtering) any possibility of current restriction and enhances dynamic range, the impedance of the chain back to the power station being far larger. When power is contaminated, dynamic range is reduced.

It is impossible to get more than 100% out of the mains supply. The very principle of AC power is that it doesn’t store energy in the transmission system. It is therefore impossible to store energy in an AC system by the very principles by which it works. There can be no so-called power reserve, thus a power reserve within an AC circuit in the truest sense of the word does not and cannot exist.

Power reserve would require the voltage to increase as ohms law insists it must, saying a circuit doesn’t sag isn’t a reserve of power. The AC waveform goes between maximum and minimum points at 50 Hz in 10 mS, it then swings to the maximum negative value. At 20 mS a full cycle is achieved. Therefore, in fact the average values of an AC waveform is zero. Only as a power wave can it be positive, this is due to the law of squared negatives. It looks like a ballooned sine wave where the value of 45 degrees is 0.5 not 0.7071 from a trigonometric table. Were this only a voltage wave it would have a long-term value of zero! As far as energy storage is concerned zero is the value of stored energy.

Direct Current resistance (DCR) will cause sag. To put it in other words, a system has to be developed which does not limit the power reserve of the power station, meaning a circuit needs to have extremely low resistance whilst maintaining sufficiently high inductance. When done correctly and in perfect balance the inductance is virtually zero at 50/60 Hz and the Direct Current resistance (DCR) is also very close to zero. Therefore, an ideal filter circuit must maintain zero Ohms resistance DC (or very close) and considerable AC resistance to noise above 50/60 Hz. Despite statements to the contrary, this is precisely where correctly specified materials matter most. Whilst some might consider these ‘exotic’ they represent a critical and important part of the function and appropriate to use. Remarkably IsoTek filter designs can maintain very low resistance at 50/60Hz but have very high amounts of noise cancellation above that frequency.

Most AC circuits are reactive – produce a reaction either from the power drawn or the circuit itself, put simply they are not pure resistors and behave like a capacitance and resistance or an inductance and resistance. In an ideal world the only allowable impediment is resistance and ideally this needs to be extremely low. A dilemma, do you want high transient power, or do you want heavy filtration – amazingly you can have both, but one must have components of the very highest quality, which are designed specifically for purpose with totally correct architecture. This is extremely complex and has resulted in the design of specialist parts; these do not exist outside the world of specialist power engineering and are unique to IsoTek designs.

DESIGN

There are a number of devices already on the market that are commonly referred to as ‘mains regenerators’. Typically, these attempt to reconstitute an ‘ideal’ mains sine wave by matching the incoming mains supply to a 50 or 60Hz ‘template’. The effectiveness of these regeneration systems is at least partially dependent upon the level of distortion of the incoming supply.

IsoTek’s Genesis is distinctly different. Unlike existing mains regenerators, it builds a completely new sine wave within two identical, independent generation cells. An extremely low distortion, synchronous sine wave generator creates a fully optimised signal inside each cell, which is amplified by a 300W generation engine running in Class A/B and fed to a high-quality output transformer with copper foil between the primary and secondary output, thus preventing distortion and noise passing through the unit. When both cells are combined, the result is 600W of continuous, newly generated power.

A critical part of the process is IsoTek’s unique synchronous sine wave system, which replicates the frequency with zero variation so as not to create destructive harmonic distortions (beat frequencies) between the incoming mains supply and the generated electricity. In addition to eliminating distortion and producing an ultra-stable sine wave, the Genesis also controls mains voltage, ensuring the output voltage is maintained at 230V +/- 2%. By way of comparison, the European standard is 230V +/- 10%.

The end result is an extremely precise and consistent 230V/50Hz (115V/60Hz) mains sine wave with vanishingly low levels of distortion, independent of the input quality of the power line. Whatever the level of distortion of the incoming mains supply, the EVO3 Genesis delivers exceptionally low THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) of between 0.05% and 0.17% with typical loads, remaining well below 0.3% with even the most complex loads.

The EVO3 Genesis was born from a desire to make a more effective mains generative component, as Keith Martin, IsoTek’s founder and managing director, explains: “We looked at existing regeneration systems and thought ‘we can build something better’; six years of extensive R&D later and this is the result. We call the Genesis a dual-cell mains sine wave generator, rather than a regenerator, to emphasise the unique way in which it operates – using two 300W generation engines to create a fully optimised mains sine wave from scratch. No other device delivers such ultra-low levels of distortion with such unerring consistency, and the resultant uplift in sound quality is remarkable: clearer, smoother and better defined, more open, dynamic and engaging.”

The EVO3 Genesis is optimised for front-end components – source components and preamplifiers – because they are Class A devices and use almost constant current regardless of the music being reproduced.

Four high-quality outlets are provided, each one fully isolated; no two outputs are connected together, thus eliminating differential mains noise created by cross-contamination between the connected audio components. At the front of the unit, a bright, clear OLED display shows input/output voltage, input/output THD, power consumption of the connected audio equipment and the power status of the generation engines.

In addition to the exceptional sonic benefits delivered to every connected component, the EVO3 Genesis delivers complete and unlimited surge protection, spike protection and over-voltage protection for valuable audio equipment. No disturbance to the incoming mains supply will be transmitted to the output sockets.

The EVO3 Genesis joins the EVO3 Super Titan – the world’s most powerful mains conditioner – at the vanguard of IsoTek’s flagship Ultimate Series. While the former is perfect for front-end components, the latter’s huge current delivery is ideal for big, current-hungry power amplifiers. Together, they form a unique, and uniquely effective, mains optimisation system – a new benchmark in clean power for the world’s finest audio-, audio-video and network component based systems, resulting in terrifically enhanced performance.

The EVO3 Genesis incorporates two identical, fully independent generation cells, each one delivering up to 300W of fully optimised power to either one or two connected audio components (600W combined, delivered to the unit’s four outlets). There are a number of advantages to this dual-cell approach. In terms of performance, the benefit can be compared to that of utilising a multi-core processor in a computer – the workload is shared, resulting in more efficient and effective operation, which in the case of the EVO3 Genesis leads to lower signal distortion. In addition, the twin generation cells are entirely isolated from each other, reducing cross-contamination between components. Plus, if the audio components connected to one of the cells are not currently in use, that cell can be powered down independently, thus reducing energy consumption.

Fashioned from aluminium, EVO3 Genesis rigid outer casing is cradled in a specially developed support structure called ISIS© (Independent System Isolation Support). The main unit is point-clamped between two panels at the top and bottom, each of which is formed of a special resonance-damping material sandwiched between two ultra-dense plates, with the overall structure supported by four substantial aluminium pillars.

ISIS© was developed in conjunction with Kurt Olbert, the founder of Clearlight Audio and an acknowledged expert in developing proprietary materials for audio applications. Its purpose is two-fold. First, it reduces the effect of airborne vibration and microphony, as well as subsonic vibration and resonance in the device itself, which are detrimental to the performance of electronics. Second, its shape, strength and resonance-damping abilities provide a perfect platform on which to place other components, its stackable design saving space when using more than one IsoTek unit.

EVO3 Genesis measures 500mm in width, 500mm deep and 300mm high. At the rear are four independent output sockets.

Genesis is the ultimate upgrade for any ultra high-end audio system improving sound stage, detailed three dimensional imaging, micro-dynamics, control and a sense of extended frequency range and openness. IsoTek’s award winning Premier power cable is also included.

The internal wiring of IsoTek products synergizes with the range of IsoTek power cables. One critical but overlooked area is maintaining commonality of design and material properties though an audio wiring loom, be it signal carrying cables or your power cable network.

"I tried the Genesis on all the source products that came through the listening room and in every instance it allowed them to produce significantly superior results. If I had an active preamp rather than the Townshend Allegri I have no doubt that it would have benefited to the same extent if not more. Genesis is extremely expensive for a power conditioner but the fact that it can do so much for a system means that you really don’t know what any component is capable of if you are just plugging it into the wall. It’s also a lot cheaper than a self powered mountain top listening room, and easier to install " - Jason Kennedy

Isotek Super Titan and Genesis Mains Conditioner and Regenerator - Read More

"I suspect that if your mains supply is a whole lot better to start with, the Isotek pairing’s relative upgrade in performance is likely to be less marked. Yet given the dramatic difference witnessed I can’t help thinking that the Super Titan / Genesis combo would wash its face in the context of any high-end system, wherever you are. Down in rural East Sussex, from budget vinyl players to high-end analogue pre-amps and affordable streamers to eye-wateringly complex AV processors, the effect of the Super Titan and Genesis pairing was uniform, unequivocally positive." - Richard Stevenson
