Polished Diamond

Every element of the second generation was rethought, from the drivers to the cabinet and crossover. As a result, the Diamond Monitor 18 mkII boasts refined low-end dynamics, delivering controlled and subtle bass. Together with excellent midrange and treble balance, it provides remarkable naturalness in instrument and voice reproduction. The created acoustic space allows for precise localization of individual instruments, resulting in a clean and clear sound for every tone. In the second generation of monitors, we decided to go for a 4-ohm impedance, so the speakers are twice as loud and take full advantage of the power offered by the amplifier. It significantly increases dynamics, and the set can be dedicated to slightly larger rooms. The excellent sound is complemented by a subtly updated design, making the speakers look even better.

Two speakers, one perfect sound

In this two-way design, the woofer is a Norwegian Seas custom driver, re-engineered by our team and made using Spider Ring technology, designed to enhance control over the manufacturing process of high-end products. Its strong magnetic circuit, specially reinforced with an additional magnet, works with a lightweight aluminum-copper voice coil, which optimizes the mass of the individual components of the vibration system and reduces the impact of the “skin effect” that occurs when current flows through the coil. The result is improved dynamics and better precision in reproducing bass and midbass structure. An aluminum basket with an openwork design also ensures a clean sound. The Diamond Monitor 18 mkII also features a bass-reflex tunnel with an increased diameter while maintaining similar cabinet tuning. As a result, the lowest frequencies are reproduced with better efficiency, eliminating audible turbulences. Woofer upgrades have also resulted in improved midrange. The use of a 1-inch voice coil guarantees excellent microdynamics in this range. The traditional dust cap was replaced by a phase plug, eliminating resonances associated with the air volume under the dome. The coated lightweight cellulose diaphragm allows for a tonally balanced, warm sound over a wide frequency range. A gentle drop in level at the upper end of the band also allows a smooth transition into the range reproduced by the tweeter. It is a new driver from Danish Scan-Speak with a more powerful neodymium magnet system, reduced voice coil mass, and eliminated ferrofluid. It delivers even better detail and microdynamics at the highest frequencies, with greater efficiency and control. Also new is the dual resonance chamber design, which further reduces the primary resonance of the tweeter. An additional advantage of this speaker is reduced nonlinear distortion. The whole complements an advanced crossover, constructed using only linear components such as air coils and polypropylene capacitors, which improves sound clarity.

Details that change everything

Compared to its predecessor, the design of the column underwent a gentle facelift. The Diamond Monitor 18 mkII has a steeper front and back angle, which makes it look even better, but also improves the time integration of individual frequency bands. The tweeter’s elegant front, crafted from durable black cellular rubber for extended longevity, not only adds a touch of exclusivity but also minimizes sound wave reflections. Cabinet wall vibrations are significantly reduced thanks to carefully considered and precisely placed reinforcements and ribs. Natural sheep’s wool and a new, specially selected soundproofing material combination dampen unwanted standing waves inside the speaker cabinet. The whole set underwent testing using a laser vibrometer and our anechoic chamber to ensure that, after all the changes, the set not only looks fabulous but also sounds excellent.
