2-way bookshelf speaker

With its modern, compact look, Kanta N°1 fits easily into all types of spaces, whether it's presented on a piece of furniture or on a stand. It uses a combination of exclusive Focal technologies to deliver excellent sound performance, with warmth, musicality and depth.

For the first time with Kanta, a Flax (French linen) cone driver has been combined with a Beryllium tweeter in a Focal loudspeaker! Flax brings clarity and precision to the sound; Beryllium offers incredible treble finesse.

Mat fronts (Black, Ivory, White) are combined with Black High Gloss, White High Gloss or Walnut High Gloss bodies, offering a wide choice of contemporary combinations. Sophisticated, the Matte effect "absorbs" light rather than reflecting it, creating a refined contrast with varnishes.

Thanks to Focus Time, all the loudspeakers are at the same distance from the ear. The modern, disruptive character of the loudspeaker is underlined by a one-piece molded wood rear shell, a Zamak base, a glass plate, discreet magnetic fabric holders...

Optional feet (height adjustable from 61.5 to 64.1 cm) in matt black aluminum are available for Kanta N°1 bookshelf speakers. These are attached to the base to prevent vibration and ensure optimum stability (decoupling spikes and glides supplied).

Stabilized surround, eliminates vibrations

While our engineers are experts in the development of exclusive diaphragms, they also innovate in all the components that make up the loudspeakers, such as the surround that connects the diaphragm to the frame, the performance of which must be mastered. Introduced in 2015, Tuned Mass Damper (TMD) technology with harmonic damping consists of the addition of finely positioned toroidal weights to stabilize the surround for even greater sonic neutrality. This technology enhances the midrange and the erratic behavior of the surround between 1 kHz and 2 kHz.

For exceptional treble

Membrane shape and materials are essential for high-fidelity reproduction. For exceptional treble, our engineers have developed the Béryllium inverted dome tweeter in pure Beryllium. Thanks to its unrivalled rigidity, Beryllium is the material of choice for high-frequency loudspeakers. Developed and patented by Focal, the pure Beryllium inverted dome is capable of covering more than five octaves (1,000 - 40,000 Hz) for perfect perception of micro-details.

Specially designed cabinetry

Everything is designed to bring softness and warmth to the sound: density and rigidity of both front and shell materials, soft angles and a double vent. A new material, favorable to acoustic parameters, is used for the façade. It is molded from a single block of High Density Polymer (HDP). This material offers enhanced performance: it is 70% denser than MDF, 15% more rigid and offers 25% more damping. The one-piece front panel eliminates any sound diffraction.

Very high sound definition

For very high-definition sound, control of the magnetic flux circulating in the loudspeaker is essential. Our acousticians have created a magnetic circuit of incredible stability, guaranteeing perfectly controlled sound: Neutral Inductance Circuit (NIC) technology. This patented technology resides in a Faraday ring whose dimensions, material and positioning are optimized to make the magnetic flux stable and the sound highly precise.

Purity and precision of sound

As the key component of a loudspeaker, the membrane is at the heart of our acoustic engineers' research. After more than five years of research and development, in 2013 Focal unveiled an exclusive membrane made from flax. Patented, this Flax cone is a sandwich made of very high quality French flax fibre placed between two thin sheets of glass fibre. It satisfies all the criteria of a high-fidelity membrane: lightness to offer good dynamics, rigidity to hold the bass and damping to deliver a neutral, natural, uncolored sound. It is an emblematic Focal innovation in many hi-fi products.

"Focal’s Kanta N°1 is without doubt a fine standmount loudspeaker. Its excellent drive units meld together well, fitted to a great cabinet and the result is a bouncy, musical and engaging sound that’s nevertheless couth and refined. It gives an open window onto the recording – but only up to a point because it can’t defy the laws of physics, and so becomes limited by its size and design constraints at very high volumes. Not only does it sound fun, but it’s gloriously styled and comes in a wide range of eye-catching finishes."

"Focal’s Kanta No1 greatly impressed me in two ways. First, I liked its looks a lot. It’s beautiful, and its styling and build quality are things you’d be proud to display. Second, in terms of being transparent to the music signal fed it, other than the No1’s inability to reproduce the bottommost octave of the audioband, it’s the most accurate and revealing Focal speaker I’ve reviewed, while retaining a touch of that liveliness the brand is known for. The result is a speaker that delivers what’s on the recording, but with just a hint of fun to its the sound. Which means that while the Kanta No1 is by no means inexpensive at $5999/pair, that price isn’t outrageous for all that it offers. If I were looking for a topflight two-way minimonitor, this is the one I’d go to first -- and maybe last. I just wish I’d got the word out sooner." - Doug Schneider

"The Kanta No1 is not a shrinking violet of a product. From the styling to the sheer intensity of the performance, this is a speaker that wants to be the focus of your attention. The good news is that when you do so, you are treated to an uncommonly talented speaker. The Kanta No1 does everything that Focal excels at but mixes this with a sense of urgency and fun that haven’t always been present at the loftier end of the product range. This is the first step on the price ladder that buys you a standmount speaker meaningfully better than the phenomenal Dynaudio Special Forty and the result is a truly outstanding speaker that has to be considered a Best Buy." - Ed Selley

"Premium-priced standmount speakers have much to prove, with few excuses made. The Focal Kanta No1 meets the challenge head on – it's a highly enjoyable listening companion available in a wide choice of colourways to enhance its charm. Its mixture of smoothness, insight and rhythmic dexterity makes it an essential audition for any audiophile looking for an able all-rounder for duty in a bijou listening space." - Nick Tate

"In terms of sound, Focal aims for an interesting middle position between an audiophile high-end sound and an accessible, forgiving reproduction that goes with everything. The Kanta N°1 is therefore a speaker that sounds extremely pleasant and gives you the feeling that you have made a real audio upgrade." - JAMIE BIESEMANS
